Professional Packing Services That Pack It Right the First Time
Packing is the slowest, most tiring part of any move. 1st Step Movers offers packing services in Pittsburgh, the South Hills and all of Washington County, from a full house packed top to bottom to just the kitchen and the fragile pieces you would rather not touch. You choose how much of the work you hand over.
Our packing service includes the materials: boxes, packing paper, bubble wrap and tape. Dishes and glasses are wrapped one by one, boxes are packed full and tight so nothing shifts, and every box is labeled with its room and contents so unpacking goes fast. You do not need to collect boxes from the grocery store or make a run for tape the night before.
Most people underestimate how long packing takes, and the kitchen is usually the room that runs over. Our guide to the hardest room to pack when moving explains why, and it is the room customers most often ask us to take off their hands.
We can pack the day before your move or the same day, unpack at your new home, and even pack for you if you are not moving with us. Art, glass tabletops and mirrors can be crated for extra protection, and for white glove moving we combine full packing, careful handling of fine furniture and unpacking in one booking.
Our professional packers are the same crews who load and move your home, so the people packing your boxes know exactly how a load rides on the truck. Packing pairs naturally with local moving in Pittsburgh and Washington County, and the same careful packing protects your things on a longer trip.
We are licensed by the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission and insured, and packing jobs have a 3 hour minimum with travel time included, Monday through Saturday. Questions about your home? Call (724) 986-9287 and talk it through with us.
How Our Packing Service Works
Four steps from a full house to boxes ready for the truck. If you are still deciding when to start, read how long before moving you should start packing.
- Tell Us What to Pack: Share the rooms, the fragile and heavy items, anything that needs crating, and your moving date. Photos of closets, the kitchen and the basement help us plan the crew and the time.
- Full or Partial: Choose the whole house, or only the kitchen, the glassware and the rooms you do not have time for. Pick a packing day before the move or the same day.
- Packing Day: We bring the materials, wrap fragile items one by one, fill every box tight and label each one with its room and contents so nothing gets lost.
- Move and Unpack: Boxes and wrapped furniture load onto our truck and go to the right rooms at the new home. If you booked unpacking, we open the boxes and take the packing materials away.
Why Hire Professional Packers From Washington County?
Most moving damage starts with the box, not the truck. Loose dishes, half full boxes and unwrapped lamps are what break on a bumpy road. Our crews pack the way they load: heavy items low, boxes full and tight, fragile pieces padded on every side.
Because the same team packs and moves your home, nothing changes hands. The crew that wrapped your china is the crew that carries it into your new kitchen, so there is no question about who packed what.
Pittsburgh homes add their own challenges. Steep driveways, narrow city stairs, split levels and basements full of tools all take planning. Boxes of a steady size stack safely on a hand truck and ride up and down hills without crushing, which is why we use proper moving boxes instead of whatever is on hand.
Packing clothes is a common question. Our post on bags or boxes for packing clothes covers what works if you plan to pack your own closets.

Packing Services FAQ
Answers to the questions people ask before booking packing services in Pittsburgh and Washington County.
Only if you book packing. A standard move covers loading, transport and unloading, with furniture wrapped in moving blankets. When you add our packing service, we pack the whole house or only the rooms you choose, move it on our truck, and can unpack at the new home too. Tell us when you call so we plan enough time and crew.
The materials are included: boxes, packing paper, bubble wrap and tape. The crew wraps fragile items one by one, packs each box full and tight so nothing shifts, and labels every box with its room and contents. Mirrors, glass and art can be crated, and on move day furniture is wrapped in blankets before it leaves the house.
Yes. Partial packing is popular. Many customers pack books, clothes and decor themselves and leave the kitchen, glassware and fragile items to us, since those take the most time and break most easily. We can also come in near the end and finish whatever is left so you are not up all night before the truck arrives.
We cannot pack hazardous or flammable items such as gasoline, propane, paint, cleaning chemicals and aerosols, or open food and perishables. Keep cash, jewelry, medications and important papers with you. Our post on household items movers will not transport lists more, so you can set them aside before packing day.
It depends on the size of the home, how full the closets, basement and kitchen are, and how many fragile items need wrapping. A kitchen alone often takes longer than several bedrooms. Many homes are packed in a day or less. Tell us what you have, or send photos, and we will plan the right crew and time.
It depends on how many rooms we pack, the number of boxes and how many fragile items need extra care. Packing jobs have a 3 hour minimum with travel time included, Monday through Saturday. The fastest way to an accurate number is a free quote through our contact page or a quick call with a list of rooms.
Yes. If you are moving yourself with a rental truck or a portable container like PODS, we can still pack your home. Our labor only moving help can load the truck or container for you too. We never drive a customer's rental truck, so you or your driver takes it from there.
At least a week ahead is best, and earlier in summer and at the end of the month, when most leases turn over. We can pack the day before your move or the same day, and we fit in last minute packing when the schedule allows. Call early if your closing date is fixed so your packing day is locked in.
You do not have to, but a few things help. Set aside what you are keeping with you, such as medications, documents, chargers and valuables, and mark anything that is not going. Empty the refrigerator, and clear out the items we cannot pack. Then our packers can work room by room without stopping to ask.
Yes. White glove moving at 1st Step means full packing plus extra care for the pieces that matter most. Fine furniture is blanket wrapped and handled with care, art, mirrors and glass can be crated, and antique pianos are moved by our piano crew. Glassware and china are wrapped piece by piece, and we unpack at your new home and take the used materials away.
Yes. A longer ride means more miles of vibration, so boxes need to be full, tight and well padded. Our crews pack the same way for long distance moves from Pittsburgh, and the same team loads the truck, so the packing and the load are planned together from the start.
Yes, if you book unpacking. We open boxes in the rooms they are labeled for, put the kitchen away and take the used paper and boxes with us, so you are not left with a garage full of packing material. Some customers have us unpack only the kitchen and bathrooms and do the rest at their own pace.
