Junk Removal From a Crew That Lifts Heavy Things for a Living
1st Step Movers handles junk removal in Pittsburgh, across Washington County and into nearby West Virginia and Ohio. You point at what has to go, and our crew carries it out, loads it and hauls it away. No dragging a couch to the curb, no renting a dumpster that sits in your driveway for a week, and no wondering whether the trash company will take it.
We are a moving company first, and that matters for junk removal. The same crew that carries pianos and gun safes up hillside steps in the South Hills knows how to get a sleeper sofa out of a basement or a dresser down a narrow staircase without gouging the walls on the way out.
Most of what we haul comes out of the places that are hardest to reach: finished basements with one tight turn at the bottom of the stairs, attics with pull down ladders, detached garages at the top of a steep driveway and back bedrooms in older Pittsburgh houses where the hallways were never built for a king mattress. Getting it out cleanly is the real work, and it is the part a moving crew is trained for.
Most jobs start with a photo. Text us a picture of the pile, the room or the single item, tell us where it is and when you want it gone, and we will send back a free quote. You can also use the quote form on this page or call (724) 986-9287.
A good photo saves time on both ends. Step back far enough to show the whole pile, add a close shot of anything large or unusual, and mention the floor it is on, how many steps lead outside and where a truck can park. On a narrow city street or a hillside lot, knowing the walk from the door to the truck lets us plan the crew and the time before we arrive.
We can schedule junk removal on its own or fold it into your local move with the same crew, so the things you are not keeping leave the house the same day the rest goes on the truck.
How Junk Removal Works
Getting rid of junk with 1st Step Movers takes four steps, and you do not lift anything.
- Send a Photo: Text a picture or fill out the quote form with what has to go, which floor it is on and the address.
- Get Your Quote: We send back a free quote and set a day and time that works for you, Monday to Saturday.
- We Carry It Out: Our crew lifts, carries and loads everything from basements, attics, garages and upstairs rooms, protecting doorways on the way.
- Hauled Away: Usable items are donated where possible, electronics are recycled and the rest is disposed of properly, so nothing is left at your curb.
Why Hire Movers for Junk Removal?
Junk removal is mostly heavy lifting in tight spaces, which is what movers do all day. Our crews are used to steep Pittsburgh stairs, split level homes, tight basement doorways and long carries from the house to the truck, so the job goes faster and your floors and walls stay intact.
We bring the same equipment we use on moves: dollies, hand trucks, moving blankets and straps. A refrigerator rides a hand truck down the steps instead of bumping down them, and a heavy dresser gets wrapped so it does not scrape a railing on the way out.
Moving soon? Tell us what you are leaving behind when you book. We can haul the old couch, the broken treadmill and the boxes nobody opened since the last move on the same day we move everything else. Our guide on what to throw out before a move helps you decide what stays and what goes.

Junk Removal FAQ
Answers to the questions people ask before booking junk removal with 1st Step Movers.
We serve all of Washington County and Pittsburgh, with most jobs in the South Hills and the communities between Pittsburgh and Washington. We also travel to nearby parts of West Virginia, including Morgantown, and to Steubenville, Ohio. If you are not sure we cover your address, send it with your photo and we will tell you.
Text us a photo of what needs to go, or use the quote form on this page or our contact page. Tell us the address, which floor the items are on and when you want them gone. We will reply with a free quote and available times.
No. Our crew picks items up wherever they are, including basements, attics, garages and upstairs bedrooms, and carries them out to the truck.
We cannot haul hazardous materials such as paint, motor oil, gasoline, propane tanks, pool chemicals, pesticides or asbestos. Those need a hazardous waste collection program. Our post on items junk removal companies will not take covers the full list and where those items can go instead. If you are unsure about an item, ask when you send your photo.
Yes. We remove washers, dryers, stoves, refrigerators, freezers and other large appliances. Disconnect and empty refrigerators and freezers before we arrive, and let us know about any appliance that is still hooked up to water or gas.
Yes. Tell us what is staying behind when you book your move, and we can load and haul it the same day, so you only coordinate one crew. If you only need help loading a truck you rented, our labor only moving help crews can load it and haul away the junk on the same visit.
When furniture and household items are still usable we donate them where we can, electronics go to recycling as Pennsylvania requires, and the rest is disposed of properly.
Yes. We clear out single rooms, garages, basements and entire homes, including estate cleanouts for families and move out cleanouts for landlords and home sellers.
Pennsylvania law keeps TVs, computer monitors, laptops and similar electronics out of regular household trash, so curbside pickup will usually leave them behind. We can carry out old TVs, including heavy tube sets and big screen consoles, along with computers and monitors, and take them for recycling with the rest of your junk.
Many Pittsburgh area municipalities only take mattresses on certain bulk days or require them to be wrapped first, and carrying one down the stairs is the hard part anyway. We carry mattresses, box springs and bed frames out of any room, load them and haul them away, so you do not have to wrap one or wait for a bulk day.
It depends on the schedule that week, so send your photo and your preferred day as early as you can. We work Monday to Saturday from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM. If the junk has to be gone before a closing, a lease end or a move in date, tell us the deadline when you ask for a quote so we can plan around it.
Bag loose small items such as clothes, papers and toys so the crew can carry them quickly. Set aside anything you are keeping, and mark it clearly if it sits in the same room as the junk. Empty drawers in dressers and desks, and clear a path to the door. You do not need to move anything outside.
