Out of State Moves Planned by the People You Actually Meet
1st Step Movers are long distance movers for Pittsburgh, the South Hills and Washington County. Whether you are moving a few hundred miles across Pennsylvania or to another state, one local company plans your move from the first walkthrough to the last piece of furniture set up in your new home.
A long distance move has more riding on it than a move across town. Your belongings are on the road for hours or days, the paperwork is governed by federal rules, and the company you hire matters more than ever. We are registered with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration for interstate household goods moves and licensed by the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission for moves within the state.
Reviewers have moved with us from McMurray to Ohio, from Pennsylvania to Vermont and Florida, and from Washington, PA to Hershey. The fastest way to start is a call to (724) 986-9287, Monday to Saturday, 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM.
We move full houses, apartments and everything in between. Tell us where you are going, when you need to be there and what is coming with you, and we plan the truck, the crew, the packing and the timeline around it.
The decisions that shape a long move are made early. Decide what is worth taking before anything is packed, since everything that goes on the truck adds to the load. Check access at both ends: steep Pittsburgh driveways, narrow streets, long walks from the curb and apartment elevators all change how loading and unloading go. If you want help with the boxes, our packing services include the materials.
Moving 40 miles or less inside Pennsylvania? That is a local move. See our local movers in Pittsburgh page for how those work.
How a Long Distance Move Works
Every interstate move follows the same basic steps under federal rules, and we walk you through each one so nothing on moving day is a surprise.
- Tell Us Where You Are Going: Share both addresses, your dates and the size of your home in a call or the quote form, plus anything heavy or unusual like a piano or safe.
- Walkthrough and Plan: We see what is moving and plan the truck size, the crew and the timeline with you, including stairs, parking and access at both homes.
- Written Estimate: You get your estimate in writing, along with the federal moving guides every interstate mover must provide, before anything is loaded.
- Pack and Load: Optional packing with materials included, then every item is inventoried, wrapped and loaded with care so it rides securely on the road.
- Deliver and Set Up: Your delivery timing is agreed in writing before loading, and at the new home furniture goes into the rooms you choose.
Why Hire a Local Crew for a Long Distance Move?
Many of the companies advertising long distance moves are brokers. They sell your move to a carrier you have never met and often cannot name until moving day. 1st Step Movers is the moving company itself, registered with FMCSA as a household goods carrier. You meet our owner, Jason, and you have one local number to call from the first question to the last box.
Our customers notice the difference in the planning. Reviewers describe Jason laying out the truck size, the timeline and how to pack before the move, then the crew packing, loading and setting up at the other end.
A local crew also knows how to get a house out of the Pittsburgh area: tight streets in older neighborhoods, long staircases, and winter mornings when the driveway needs care before anything heavy comes down it. Before you pick any long distance mover, it helps to know the red flags with movers so you can compare quotes with confidence.

Long Distance Moving FAQ
Answers to the questions people ask before hiring long distance movers in Pittsburgh. Before any interstate move, read the FMCSA guides Ready to Move? and Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move.
It depends on how much is moving, how far it is going, whether you want packing, access at both homes such as stairs and long carries, your timing and any specialty items like a piano or gun safe. We look at what is moving and give you a written estimate before you book.
It depends on the distance, the size of the move and how much packing is involved. A large home may need a full day to pack and load before the truck leaves. Your pickup and delivery timing is agreed in writing before the truck is loaded, so you can plan travel, keys and utilities around it.
Under federal rules, a binding estimate guarantees the total cost for the items and services listed. A non binding estimate is the mover's best estimate, and the final cost can be higher, but at delivery you only have to pay up to 110 percent of it before your goods are released. Ask us which applies to your move.
Interstate movers must offer Full Value Protection, where the mover repairs, replaces or pays the value of lost or damaged items. You can waive it in writing for Released Value, which costs nothing extra but only covers a low amount per pound. Valuation is not insurance. You choose on the bill of lading.
Look the company up by its USDOT number on the FMCSA website, make sure it is the carrier and not a broker, and get a written estimate after it has seen what is moving. Be careful with large cash deposits or blank paperwork. 1st Step Movers is registered with FMCSA for interstate household goods moves.
Hazardous materials such as gasoline, propane tanks, paint, cleaning chemicals and ammunition cannot go on the truck, and neither can perishable food. Keep important papers, medications, jewelry and other valuables with you. Ask us about houseplants on long moves. If you are unsure about something, ask during the walkthrough.
Four to six weeks ahead is a good target, and earlier for summer and the end of the month, when moving dates fill up fastest. If you are on a tighter timeline, call and we will tell you what is open.
Yes. We move families from Washington County and Pittsburgh to other parts of Pennsylvania under our PA PUC license, like the Washington to Hershey move one reviewer described. Not sure whether your move is local or long distance? Read what counts as a long distance move.
It depends on how much work you want to do. With a container like PODS, you pack and load it yourself or hire help, and the container company handles the drive. With a full moving company, the crew wraps, loads, drives and unloads. We can also provide labor to load a container you rent. Compare the total effort, not just the quote.
Sort and donate what you will not use before packing starts, label boxes by room, and set aside a bag with medications, chargers, papers and a few days of clothes. Reserve parking or elevator time at both homes if needed, clear a path for furniture, and empty, defrost and dry the refrigerator a day ahead.
Yes. Pianos and gun safes are some of the heaviest items in a home, and we bring the equipment and extra hands they need. Tell us about them when you first call so they are part of the plan and the written estimate. Our piano moving page covers how we handle uprights and grands.
Tipping is never required, but it is a common way to thank a crew that worked hard, especially after a long day with stairs or long carries. Most people tip each mover individually at the end of the job, and offering water and lunch during a long load is always appreciated. See our guide on tipping movers in Pittsburgh for what is typical.
