Washington, PA Movers Who Work Here Every Week
1st Step Movers is a locally owned moving company based in Canonsburg, a short trip up Interstate 79 from Washington. We move many families in and around the city, and Washington sits right in the middle of the area we cover, so our crews know the downtown blocks, the side streets and the neighborhoods on the edge of town.
As the county seat, Washington mixes a busy downtown around the courthouse and Washington & Jefferson College with quieter residential streets. That mix shapes moving day. A walk up apartment near Main Street calls for a different plan than a house with a driveway outside the city, and we set the crew, truck and timing around the home you actually have.
Most moves inside Washington, or from Washington to Canonsburg, Pittsburgh or anywhere else within 40 miles in Pennsylvania, are local moves billed by the hour under our PA PUC tariff, with a 3 hour minimum that includes travel time. Our local moving service page explains how those moves work from the first call to the last box.
Call (724) 986-9287 Monday to Saturday, 7 AM to 7 PM, and tell us both addresses, the stairs at each home and any big pieces. We will build the plan before the truck ever pulls up.
Moving in Washington: What to Plan For
A few things about the city that change how a move goes.
Downtown parking
Around the courthouse on South Main Street and the college blocks, street parking fills fast. Tell us what is near your door so we can place the truck close and keep the carry short.
Interstates 70 and 79
The two interstates share a stretch of road in the Washington area, which makes moves north toward Canonsburg and Pittsburgh or out of state straightforward to route.
Winter on the hills
Snow and ice show up most winters. We cover floors at the door, salt and clear the path when needed, and keep furniture wrapped between the house and the truck.
Older buildings
Historic downtown buildings often mean narrow stairways and tight turns. We measure the big pieces ahead of time and take apart what needs it so nothing scrapes a wall.

How We Plan Your Move
Every Washington job starts with a short conversation about both homes: the floor you live on, whether there is an elevator, where a truck can stop and which items need extra care. That is how we decide the crew size and how long the job should take. If you are still deciding when to book, our guide on how far in advance to book movers covers the timing.

Washington, PA Moving FAQ
Answers to what people in Washington ask before they book a mover.
Yes. We handle moves inside the city, across Washington County and north to Pittsburgh and the South Hills. Moves within 40 miles inside Pennsylvania are local hourly moves under our PA PUC tariff. Call (724) 986-9287 with both addresses and we will tell you how we would plan it.
We are based at 605 Highland Ave in Canonsburg, a short drive from downtown Washington along Interstate 79. Being this close means our crews spend their days in Washington County, and we can usually reach Washington homes early in the morning.
Yes. Walk up apartments and older buildings are a big part of what we do. Tell us the floor, the width of the stairway, whether there is an elevator and where a truck can park. We bring enough people for the stairs and pad the railings and door frames before anything comes down.
Two to four weeks ahead is a comfortable window for most local moves, and earlier for the end of the month or the summer. Shorter notice is sometimes possible, so it is still worth calling. Our post on how far in advance you need movers goes into more detail.
The size of the home, the number of stairs at each end, how far the truck sits from the door, how much is packed before we arrive and how many large pieces need to come apart. A ground floor apartment with everything boxed goes much faster than a three story house packed on the day.
Yes. 1st Step Movers is registered with FMCSA for interstate household goods moves, and we have moved Washington families to other parts of Pennsylvania, including Hershey. A move that leaves the state is planned as one job, from loading in Washington to unloading at the new home. See our long distance moving page for how those moves are planned.
Yes, we work through most winter weather. We clear and salt the path where we need to, lay floor protection at every door and keep furniture wrapped while it is outside. If roads become unsafe we call you early to talk through options rather than show up late.
Yes. Moves Monday to Saturday carry a 3 hour minimum, and that minimum includes travel time. Smaller jobs, like a few heavy pieces or a one bedroom apartment, often fit inside it, and larger homes simply run longer. We tell you up front how long we expect your job to take.
Yes. Our labor only crews load or unload the truck or container you rent, using our own dollies, blankets and straps. You drive the truck; our crews never drive a customer rental. It is a good fit when you want to handle the driving yourself.
